âTrain up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.â â Proverbs 22:6
When Emilyâs son Liam was born, she felt both awe and anxiety. How do you raise a child to love God, make wise choices, and become a person of character in todayâs world?
At first, she thought the answer was being the âperfect momâ â Pinterest crafts, daily devotionals, perfectly packed lunches.
But life wasnât always picture-perfect. There were tantrums, sleepless nights, and seasons of doubt.
One day, during a particularly rough patch, Emilyâs grandmother gently reminded her of Proverbs 22:6.
âItâs not about perfection,â her grandmother said. âItâs about planting the right seeds, early and often. Thatâs your job. God will do the growing.â
From that moment on, Emily shifted her focus. She began incorporating small, consistent moments of training into daily life â reading Bible stories before bedtime, praying together on the way to school, and teaching Liam to say âthank youâ and âIâm sorry.â
She even started asking questions like:
âWhat do you think God would want you to do?â
âHow can we show kindness today?â
At first, it didnât seem like much. But years later, something beautiful happened.
Liam, now a teenager, came home from school and told her about a friend who was struggling.
âI prayed with him,â he said, âbecause I remember how you always prayed with me.â
Tears filled Emilyâs eyes. The seeds she had planted â sometimes through tears, sometimes with faith the size of a mustard seed â had taken root.
đ± What This Teaches Us
Proverbs 22:6 isnât just a nice saying â itâs a powerful truth. Children absorb far more from what we do consistently than what we say occasionally.
âTrain upâ doesnât mean control or force. It means guide, nurture, and model. It means showing them how to walk in wisdom, how to seek God, and how to live with integrity â even when no one is watching.
Itâs about recognizing their unique strengths and helping them discover their purpose in Godâs bigger story.
đ ïž How You Can Start Today
Pray with your child daily â even short, simple prayers matter.
Read a Bible verse together each night and talk about it.
Help them process emotions through a faith-based lens.
Celebrate obedience and kindness more than achievements.
Speak life into their identity: âYou are loved. You are chosen. You are Godâs masterpiece.â
đ Final Thought
Raising a child isnât easy â but it is eternally significant. You may not see the results right away, but every act of training is a seed planted in fertile soil.
Just like Emily, youâre not raising a child for today â youâre raising them for eternity.
So keep planting. Keep praying. Keep showing up.
Because when they are old⊠they will not depart from it.
If youâve ever felt like youâre falling behind or not measuring up, youâre not aloneâbut you donât have to stay there.
